An Excerpt from an Unknown Patriot Act Victim’s Journal

The following is a journal entry written by an unidentified detainee held in an eastern European prison under a provision of the USA PATRIOT Act. It was found underneath an old, soiled mattress scrawled on a worn piece of scrap paper in a now empty cell by one of the jail’s former guards (who prefers to remain nameless). Judging from the various other scrap entries found written in the same hand, the author is a US citizen who was being detained for unnamed terrorism-related charges from at least the latter half of 2006 well into 2007, but he himself admits that he lost track of the days soon into his detention. It is unknown what happened to the man after the last dated entry.

Anyone who is uneasy about vivid descriptions of torture may wish to stop reading. And now, the journal entry:

October 26(??), 2006

Today was not fun at all. First of all, I didn’t get any sleep. During the interogation [sic] last night, that blond haired guard kept shouting, “who did you give the money to? who did you give the money to?” Of course, I didn’t know what he was talking about, as I said several times before, but he still wouldn’t listen. Still, I respect the guy. I mean, he’s doing his part over here to help protect us from terrorism. You got to respect that.

Anyway, since I couldn’t give him any answers, he decided that I needed to sit in a stress position all night. Great. I get to squat down and stand on the balls of my feet with my hands around my ankles instead of sleeping. I shouldn’t complain, though. I mean, they need to do this to get the bad guys. Sure, they get the wrong people occationally [sic]. Nobody’s perfect. But if our gov. didn’t do this, who knows what would be happening? We wouldn’t have the information we needed to make sure that we’re not hit again. I can tell you that that would be a whole lot worse than jailing a few wrong people.

So, after several hours in the stress position, I was given a bowl of some weird grey, mushy food. Kind of looked like oatmeal, but was nowhere near as good. Then back to the cell. The nice thing about stress positions is that there’s usally [sic] a guard sitting there with you watching you. I mean, they don’t say anything to you, and if they do it’s usually yelling, but still, the company is nice. When they leave you alone, it’s sort of creepy. The prison’s pretty much empty. And it’s all rusty and starting to fall apart too. When they leave you there too long, your mind starts to wander thinking about if they’ll ever come back or anything. That’s one of the scariest parts since you can’t really do anything to get out if they do forget you. But I suppose it’s all part of their plan, you know? They have to be strong on terror, or else they’ll attack again. That’s why I voted for Bush in the last election. He’s got the guts to stand up to the extremists and won’t stop at anything to get them. That’s what our country needs, I think. I mean, America is a great country. We stand for life, liberty and the persuit [sic] of happiness. We give fair trials and we all have our freedom. If we just let the terrorists win, all that America stands for will be taken away from us.

Well, I think I hear the guards coming. Probably time for another water boarding. I keep telling them that I don’t know any Mohommeds [sic], but that doesn’t seem to mean much to them. Still, I appreciate what they’re doing. After all, as they say, the terrorists hate us for our freedom. I don’t want to live in a world where we allow terrorists to take our freedom away from us.

  1. This man is an American hero.

  2. No, he is not. The government has deemed him a threat to our nation and I think our government knows what it’s doing. After all, this is America.

~~And there ain’t no doubt I love this land! God bless the USA!~~

America…Love it or leave it! (I’m looking at you, liberals)

  3. I savor, cause I discovered just what I used to be taking a look for.
You have ended my 4 day long hunt! God Bless you man.

    Have a great day. Bye
